Is the three headed Indian snake everything it seems?

March 10, 2012 by Andrew 1 Comment

Photo and discovery blogs have been posting a picture of a strange three headed snake for more than a year ago. The picture shows a Tata lorry stopped in the background and a group of people on the far side of the road watching and taking pictures of a yellow and black three headed snake.

The fact that there’s a group of people watching and taking photos of the snake that make it convincing. After all, if the snake didn’t have three heads then why are people taking pictures? In addition, two headed snakes do happen.

However, if you really dig into this photograph mystery you can find the original picture. This isn’t a three headed snake. It’s just a photoshop illusion.

In fact, someone has taken the trick even further and created a horrible hyrda version of the same snake. The photoshopping may not be as good, the effect clearly fake but it does emphasis the point.

Have you ever found pictures of strange or mysterious animals that you suspected would have to be a photoshop trick? Or is it wrong to dismiss everything that seems out of this world as a fake?

Two-headed albino snake

July 15, 2011 by Andrew Leave a Comment

The video below is from a zoo in southern Ukraine which has a two-headed albino snake. The Shazka zoo is in the vity of Yalta on the Black Sea. Th name “Skazka” can translate as “fairy tale”.

The Libyans have the legend of the amphisbaena as a two-headed snake, although in this version the heads are at each end of the snake, that was written about by Pliny the Elder.

In truth two-headed snakes are not that rare. Snakes with polycephaly, or two heads, are generally conjoined twins. Typically one head is parasitic in that the other head “grew” the rest of the snake’s organs and the parasite head simply uses them.

Snakes hunt by smell. Two-headed snakes can confuse themselves with their own smells.

Is Heineken promoting animal fighting?

July 4, 2011 by Andrew 22 Comments

Update: As we suspected – Heineken had nothing to do with dog fighting. Read on to discover about snakes.

It wouldn’t be cool for a brand to promote bear-baiting, dog fighting, badger-baiting or cock fighting. Would it? What about snake fights? Snakes don’t have fur or feathers. Does that make them different?

I’m really not sure about the latest Heineken ad. It seems to be suggesting that snake fights are cool. Okay, the ad says the secret, off shore, snake fight is for charity but does that change the fact humans are encourging animals to fight each other?

2012: Dog fighting update

It’s a year after the snake fighting advert and Heineken find themselves in a dog fighting drama. This time concerns centre around this picture which seems to show Heineken banners beside a dog fighting pit.

However, I think there are real questions as to whether Heineken actually put them there or whether the venue happens to be a Heineken outlet and, without telling the brand (which seems likely), gets involved in animal cruelty.

What do you think? Is Heineken pushing too hard to be cool with this ad? Have they crossed the line?

Giant snake spotted escaping Mississippi floods

May 17, 2011 by Andrew 1 Comment

The American army have opened flood gates in Louisiana to try and protect large cities along the Mississippi River. The move means some 3,000 square miles of land will be flooded, some 25,000 people and 11,000 buildings may be effected.

Boing Boing have unearthed a photo that suggests some rather interesting animals have also been effected. This photograph apparently shows a huge snake, fleeing along the roadside, away from the flood waters.

Boing Boing hopes the photo is a fake. What do you think? Is it real?

Very angry cobras. Very calm man.

Imagine your job was to clean the cobra den in the zoo. I think they call it the cobra pit. All you have to do is sweep away the dung, cast off skin and sort the dead eggs from the viable ones.

Could you do it?

Could you do it if you had to go in in sandals, shorts and all you had was a broom?

Someone does.

In Pure Spirit

There’s something about this video which makes me think of how humankind could interact and live alongside nature. I would not have thought this was possible but it clearly is.

I bet you have your own views on this fantastic footage!
