Haunting firefly time-lapse photography

January 12, 2015 by Andrew 1 Comment

This remarkable video was made in the summer of 2013 with time-lapse photography taken around the Lake of the Ozarks, MO and Grand Ledge, MI in the US.

The soundtrack was composed by Brandon McCoy for the film and is called “Luciole” which is French for firefly.

Amazingly, this was Vincent Brady’s first attempt at a time-lapse video.

When a flying drone meets the incredible Dom Tower

December 3, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

This video footage was taken by a drone as it explores the area around the 11 meter tall Dom Tower in The Netherlands. This is the tallest church tower in Europe.

History of the Dom Tower of Utrecht

Standing 368 feet, the Dom Tower of Utrecht looms over much of the city and is the tallest church building in the whole of the Netherlands.

Designed by John of Hainaut, construction of the stunning tower began in 1321 and took 61 years to complete due to funding problems. The tower’s size was supposed to demonstrate the power the Catholic Church held locally, but it wasn’t a popular structure amongst much of the clergy.

Indeed, Geert Groote, the local preacher and founder of the Brethren of Common Life, was particularly vocal in his opposition of its construction, arguing that it was too tall, too ostentatious and too expensive.

The tower now stands freely but originally it was attached to the Cathedral of St Martin. The nave of the cathedral was an ongoing building project for much of the medieval period and was still not fully completed when freak weather conditions struck in 1674.

A tornado ripped through the building and left it ruins, but somehow the tower itself managed to survive any major damage. It was left as a single structure while the debris was cleared and even though the cathedral was rebuilt during the 19th century, the tower remains free-standing.

The biggest threat to the future of the Dom Tower occurred in 1836 when a storm heavily damaged its top floor. There were some calls for the building to be demolished, but as it is the city’s main symbol, the decision was taken to restore it instead with work taking five years.

While no longer connected to a house of worship, it is still possible to get married inside its walls. However, it mainly serves as tourist attraction and has its own visitor centre and gift shop.

For a fee, tourists are able to climb its 465 steps and gain unrivalled views of Utrecht and beyond. You do not have to walk up all the steps at once thankfully as there are floors to stop off on, including the area where the tower’s 14 huge ringing bells are.

Killer Whales chase a boat

May 8, 2013 by Andrew Leave a Comment

This incredible video shows a pod or orca, aka killer whales, chasing the boat like playful dolphins.

I’m not clear why orca would act this way. They’re smart enough to have fun and enjoy a race so perhaps that’s all that was going on. In any case the video does a great job at showing these majestic but dangerous swimmers in the wild.

In Pure Spirit

What are your views about keeping killer whales aquariums and places like Sea World? Is it necessary for research, learning about the animals and for looking after those whales who wouldn’t survive if put back to sea?

Ghost on video: A haunting in Ashford?

October 29, 2012 by Andrew 1 Comment

At the Montpelier Business Park in Ashford, Kent, the printing firm SMP Large Format, recorded something strange on their CCTV. A mysterious “ghost” – certainly a white shape – can be seen entering the video from the right and floating over to the left.

Paranormal investigators talk a lot about orbs. Some cite them as valid supernatural activity but others, and sceptics, dismiss them as dust or camera flare.

Nick Henry, the production manager, noticed a strange flash on the screen and so hit rewind on the tape to see what had caused it. He tells Kent Online, that;

“I am not a sensationalist, but the boys who work in the factory feel there is something there or watching them.

“We have not seen this orb or glow again since, but a couple of them have said they’ve noticed their tools being moved.

“One of them even got trapped after a really heavy piece of kit somehow moved to block a door – again, when no one else was around.”

Montpelier Business Park is near Victoria Park and about 20 minutes drive from the village of Pluckley. Some consider Pluckley to be the most haunted village in England.

What’s your opinion of the video? Is this paranormal activity caught on tape? Or is this something else?

Planet Under Pressure: The Anthropocene

April 28, 2012 by Andrew Leave a Comment

You should watch this video and learn about the “Anthropocene”. This is a new era for the world – one in which the growth of mankind is a force equivalent in scale to a major geological process.

Or perhaps you don’t care – if that’s the case then the animation is still worth watching. It’s fantastic.

Six-legged calf survives against the odds

March 30, 2012 by Andrew 1 Comment

When Lilli was born vets were certain she wouldn’t survive. However, the little calf has defied the odds and despite being born with a serious mutation – six legs; two of which hang from her back – she seems to be doing well.

The six-legged calf was born in a Swiss farm. The farmer, Andreas Knutti has said he’ll be happy to keep Lilli in the farm even if it turns out she doesn’t produce any milk. At the time he said he couldn’t bring himself to euthanise the calf because she seemed so full of life. Right now, Lilli and her six legs are proving to be quite a tourist attraction.

Are you surprised that Lilli is doing so well?

Haunted IGA supermarket in Adelaide

March 24, 2012 by Andrew Leave a Comment

A supermarket in Australia is in the centre of a high profile haunting debate – with believers and sceptics being vocal on both sides. The IGA supermarket came to mass public attention after an Australian TV show didn’t just discuss a possible haunting – but showed CCTV footage of a package apparently flying off the shelf.

As discussed in the show there was a murder just outside the building. Could this death have been enough to manifest a spirit?

What do you think? Is this paranormal activity caught on camera?

Last Call at the Oasis

March 14, 2012 by Andrew 1 Comment

The company behind An Inconvenient Truth, Food Inc and The Cove have created another documentary designed to encourage social responsibility. It’s called Last Call at the Oasis.

Last Call at the Oasis takes a look at water – at how much we need water and how badly we waste it.

There’s a website, also called Last Call at the Oasis, in place to act as the central communications pub. The film is due to hit some cinemas (probably in America) on May the 4th (Star Wars day) and will hopefully go from strength to strength.

Are you going to do anything to change how you consume water? Or have you seen the documentary; what did you make of it?

Exploding iceberg showers tourists with ice shards

March 12, 2012 by Andrew Leave a Comment

A boat tour by Wilhemina Bay in Antarctica took an interesting turn when a nearby iceberg exploded causing shards of ice to fly towards the tourists.

The video below is loud, watch your speakers but certainly listen as the guide warns that the fear is these icebergs wouldn’t last one more year. One tourist points out that this particular iceberg didn’t seem likely to last the day as large chunks of ice started to drop off.

“Why don’t we just stay here and watch it,”

They do exactly that – but only for a few seconds. The iceberg implodes, crashing down onto icy waters which results in an explosion of shards hurling towards the boat. The captain guns the engine to dodge the bulk of the impact.

Is climate change a real thing – or has it been made up by a liberal media or emerging markets looking to hold back certain western economies?

What was the Phoenix Fox flash?

March 12, 2012 by Andrew Leave a Comment

A video from Phoenix Fox 10 has counted up millions of views after it seems to show a mysterious flash.

Have you ever wondered why so many mysterious lights are never caught on truly credible camera sources? The Phoenix Fox Flash turns that scenario around – it was during a mainstream TV report that the flash was caught on camera. The show then returned to the incident, let the audience watch it in slow motion and then discounted the possiblity of a transformer sparking.

In Pure Spirit

What do you think is responsible for the flash of light? Do you think this could be a clever PR stunt by the TV station or has something strange been caught on very public camera?
