Using Google to track cryptids

May 17, 2022 by Andrew Leave a Comment

The travel site Next Vacay has used what people search for to work out where in the world we might see cryptids.

How? Here’s what they say;

We utilized our keyword tool to identify countries and states which had high levels of search volume in relation to these cryptids, as well as associated terms ([Cryptid] Real, [Cryptid] sightings, [Cryptid]. For each cryptid, we divided the search volume by the country’s population, which provided us with the country that had the highest search volume per capita. A limitation present in this study is that we were unable to look into each country’s search volume for cryptids in their native language. Additionally, we could not consider every local variation of the cryptid’s name. The country with the highest search volume for each cryptid was avoided, as only a couple of countries dominated due to the size of their population.

There are some weird stats and Next Vacay noticed that California gets a lot of people searching vampires whereas Georiga looks for mermaids and worryingly Texas focuses on chupacabra.

Is there something in the cupboard? Whisper

July 29, 2018 by Andrew 2 Comments

Starring Michelle Khare “Whisper” is a film about something we think about all the time… about that thing in the shadows just out of sight.

In this case, we have a pretty young woman in bed and her Alexa, Amazon’s smart speaker, can hear something whispered. This voice isn’t a thing we can hear clearly, and yet we kind of know there’s something there.

Do you have an Alexa? Has it ever seemed to reply to something which wasn’t there?

Subway bans Ouija boards

June 11, 2017 by Andrew Leave a Comment

The management of this Subway found reason to put up a rather strange sign. It makes you wonder what might have happened here that made printing such a sign necessary in the first place.

Do you agree with the owners? Are they entitled to ban paying customers from using Ouija boards in the building? Or do you think the sign will backfire and if anyone wanted to stir up trouble for them that they will anyway?

Did this Snapchat faceswap capture a spirit?

December 31, 2016 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Snapchat is more than just an app that allows you to send messages that self-destruct after they’ve been read. Today’s version of the app is focused around video messaging and pioneered clever visual filters to spice up those messages.

Want to see what you look like with puppy ears, or as a pirate or with glamour make-up on? Snapchat has a filter for that. One of Snapchat’s most popular filters is the faceswap. Look into the camera with a friend and Snapchat will swap your faces around and you’ll get to send a hilariously weird message to friends.

It’s become common to hold up items with faces for Snapchat’s faceswap filter to use. The effect is funny and allows you to faceswap by yourself.

But what if Snapchat finds a face in the picture that you weren’t expecting? That’s what has appeared here! This picture, uploaded to Reddit shows a young woman trying to faceswap with a Care Bear… except, the computer’s algorithm has seen another face. Snapchat’s camera has looked into the darkness behind the woman and seen the contours of a face!

The result? Both weird and spooky at the same time!

What do you think might have caused this? A patch of shadow that just happened to look like a face?

Is your freezer haunted? Do strange spikes form on your ice cubes?

March 19, 2016 by Andrew 1 Comment

There are concerns that strange spikes of ice forming in your freezer, reaching up from ice cubes and towards the door is a sign of supernatural activity in your kitchen.

You shouldn’t be worried. Ice spikes are perfectly natural and we have the science to explain what’s going on.

Over a million people have watched Veritasium’s video which suggests the ice spike phenomena was of widespread interest.

The maths behind the paranormal

March 12, 2016 by Andrew 1 Comment

Ask any mathematician about normal distribution and they’ll be able to tell you exactly what it is. In fact, most school kids can draw you a graph of normal distribution.

As it turns out … it’s pretty easy to draw paranormal distribution too!

Did Google Streetview capture a ghost on camera?

February 14, 2016 by Andrew 1 Comment

A man browsing Google’s Streetview has found a demonic face appearing out of a window in the Walton area of Liverpool.

He told The Liverpool Echo;

I was looking on Google Street View to find a fish and chip shop in Walton, and I came across The Stuart Hotel.

Something in the top left hand window caught my eye. It looks like a ghostly image of an evil-looking face.

While In Pure Spirit can’t find the original tweet pictures of the ghost-like face are available.

Tom Slemen, a paranormal researcher with experience of Liverpool, confirmed to the paper that The Stuart Hotel is believed to be haunted but wouldn’t vouch for the authenticity of the faces.

According to Slemen one paranormal occurrence in the hotel dates back to 1897 when a scratching noise was heard in the cellar. To begin with the sound was dismissed as being a rat or mice but it became louder and louder. Eventually the neighbours could hear it as well.

Three days later the whole building was shaking to such a degree that the pub windows were left open in case the vibrations shattered the class. After that the noise stopped but a regular drinker knocked three times on the cellar wall and received three knocks back in response. That was enough for the noise to start again. Eventually a priest from St Mary’s Church left a Bible in the cellar and the noise stopped for good.

IPS is unable to confirm whether the Bible is still in The Stuart Hotel.
