Bowie plays Thomas Jerome Newton, a being from a drought-ravaged planet who disguises himself as a tall, frail Englishman to walk among humans. His initial interactions with Earth highlight the strange, overlooked details of human life. Newton treats a simple glass of water with desperation, only to be gradually seduced by the decadent habits of his human companions. His relationship with Mary-Lou introduces him to alcohol, television banks, and emotional volatility, pulling him away from his rescue mission.

The narrative examines what an alien might actually do upon arriving here: patent advanced technology, accumulate wealth, and hire lawyers like Oliver Farnsworth. Yet, rather than conquering the world, the alien is conquered by it. Newton becomes a prisoner of his own success, watched by shadowy government figures and betrayed by his closest human confidant, Dr Nathan Bryce. The film remains an uncomfortable, striking observation of human behaviour through an outsider’s eyes.
