Healthy food for your little superheroes

February 23, 2016 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Looking for a way to encourage your family to eat healthy food? There’s plenty of superhero action on the cinema screen, TV and Netflix these days so perhaps these superheroes could help out?

Fish is the Dish, a site from the Sea Fish Industry Authority, is here to help. They’ve put together some superhero sea food recipes. Here’s a few of their ideas.

Gotham City fish finger skyline

Gotham skyline

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients:

400g skinless sustainable white fish, sliced into 12 strips
1 egg, beaten
85g white breadcrumbs, made from day-old or toasted bread
2 tsp olive oil
1 sheet of nori (seaweed), found in the sushi section of the supermarket
Salt and pepper to season

Method

1.       Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Crack the egg into a shallow dish and beat.

2.       Tip the breadcrumbs onto a plate and mix in some salt and pepper.

3.       Cut fish into 12 strips of different lengths and widths. The more unique the sizes and shapes, the more like a skyline your fish fingers will look.

4.       Brush a non-stick baking sheet with oil.

5.       Dip the fish strips into the egg, then roll them in the breadcrumbs. Transfer to the baking sheet.

6.       Bake for 20 minutes until golden.

7.       If you want to get really creative, whilst fish fingers are baking, cut small squares out of the nori using scissors. Place the squares onto the fish fingers once out of the oven to look like windows.

Superman stuffed red pepper cape

supes-cape

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes

Serves 4

Ingredients:

2 red peppers
2 cups of cous cous (1/2 cup per person)
1 small onion, diced
1 yellow pepper, diced
½ red chilli, deseeded and diced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 fillets of smoked haddock
1 vegetable stock cube
2 tsp olive oil
2 tbsp butter

Method

1.       Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Slice the red peppers into halves lengthwise (from stock to base). Remove the stock, insides and all seeds, lay on a baking tray and place in middle of the oven for 20 minutes. If you want to be extra creative, cut some ‘S’ shapes out of an additional red pepper and place them in the oven.

2.       Heat the oil in a large non-stick pan. Add the finely diced red chilli and garlic. Simmer for 1 minute. Add the yellow pepper and onion. Leave to simmer until soft – this should take around 5-7 minutes.

3.       Boil the kettle and dissolve the vegetable stock cube in one cup of boiling water. Pour the cous cous into a large bowl, pour the stock over and cover the bowl to keep the heat in.

4.       Remove the vegetables from the pan and add the butter. Once the butter is melted, add the smoked haddock and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Remove from the heat.

5.       Flake the haddock into the cous cous. Add the vegetables and stir.

6.       Remove the peppers from the oven. They should now be softened. Spoon the mixture into the peppers, filling them to the top.

7.       Serve – with the superman ‘S’ on top of the cous cous.

Most of the water on Earth is actually alien

January 28, 2015 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Unlike the other planets in our solar system Earth’s surface is about 70% water. Why is that? Shouldn’t the sun have dried out all the water long ago?

As it turns out our water is alien. We’ve Carbonaceous Chondrites from beyond the frost line to thank.

In Pure Spirit

What do you make of the science? Is it surprising that water isn’t native to this planet? Imagine what that means for holy water, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy and countless other water based activities.

Incredible photographs show nature reclaim a transport ship with a floating forest

In Homebrush Bay, Sydney, Australia you can see a remarkable floating forest. The remains of an abandoned transport ship, a 1911 steam collier, is slowly being overgrown by a forest. Humankind has helped. From 2008 to 2010 there was an effort to remove chemicals from Homebush.

These incredible photographs come from Bruce Hood, Andy Brill and Stephane & Eva. The set was first made public by This is Colossal.

Explore the ancient Egyptian city found beneath the waves

January 13, 2015 by Andrew 2 Comments

Two years ago the ancient city of Thonis-Heracleion was found below the waves in the Abu Qir Bay. Just off the coast of Egypt but lost for hundreds of years, scientists had no idea what they would found.

Thonis-Heracleion was founded around the 8th century BC and after a series of natural disasters it vanished completely by the 8th century AD. There was some mention of an important temple of Amun in texts but the city came close to vanishing entirely from written records.

In the watery ruins scientists also found a huge statue of the god Hapi. It once was part of the temple of Heracleion and part of the city. As it happens, Hapi is is the god of flooding of the Nile, perhaps appropriate for a sunken city, as well as being a symbol of fertility.

Is plastic confetti killing our oceans?

January 11, 2015 by Andrew Leave a Comment

We all know that large collections of plastic are harmful and a problem in the ocean. As it turns out that micro-plastics are just as dangerous even if it is much harder to track their effect.

This useful video from Minute Earth has notched up over half a million views in half a year. Do you think each one of those people renewed their efforts to avoid water pollution?

In Pure Spirit

Are you worried about micro-plastic pollution? What are you doing about it?

If you want to support a charity that directly works with the enviroment then two interesting ones to consider are the National Trust and Royal Horticultural Society. Both are keenly involved in making sure humankind and nature get on well together.

North Carolina beach complete with a shark feeding frenzy

January 10, 2015 by Andrew Leave a Comment

If you’re just walking along the sand, the breaking waves washing against your feet would you end up in the middle of a shark feeding frenzy?

You could.

This video shows the shore of a beach in North Carolina host more than 100 sharks. The sharks were caught in a feeding frenzy, chomping their way through a school of fish they had pushed into the shallows.

True shark fans know all about the Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and have all the goodies. Others are keen to avoid these impressive predators at all times. Where are you on the shark scale?

The strange salt cube natural phenomenon of the Dead Sea

January 4, 2015 by Andrew 3 Comments

Isn’t it remarkable? Normally the waves round down stones over time. That’s where sand comes from. In this case we’ve square salt cubes washing up. Salt would normally dissolve in water. Cubes caught in waves wouldn’t keep their straight edges for long.

In Pure Spirit

Have you ever been to the Dead Sea? What was it like and would you recommend it to others?

Did fishermen really find a dragon skeleton in the Chinese Sea?

December 27, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

According to the Japanese news site Byoukan Sunday there is debate as to whether this is a strange discovery or a hoax.

The find is dated March 2013 and was apparently made by a Chinese fisherman. As the Japanese newspaper points out the bones are rather perfect for a washed up skeleton, though. Could they have been hand carved?

As a hoax it is still a remarkable piece of art.

What do you think? Is this a hoax or do you think the Chinese really have their hands on a skeleton that belongs to a creature we’ve never seen before?

Or is there a third option? Is this a partial skeleton of a more common creature? A whale, for example.

Pelican wave dive bombs the beach

August 28, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Not a good time to be a fish. I wouldn’t have wanted to have been swimming just in the patch of shore that this flock of pelicans took notice of either!

This remarkable video shows a rolling wave of dive bombing birds as they plunge into the breaking waves in search of a fishy treat.

The monstrous body of a two-headed dolphin

August 12, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

two-headed-dolphin

The shocking corpse of a strange two-headed dolphin was found by a school teacher on holiday in Turkey. The Telegraph reports how Turgul Metin described making his discovery.

“I noticed the dolphin in the sea and watched as it washed on to the beach.

“I couldn’t take it in at first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.

“I’ve never even heard about a dolphin like this let alone seen one with my own eyes.”

It is believed that the animal is a conjoined pup and probably only a year old. Metin noticed the dolphin’s eyes had not fully formed.

In Pure Spirit

Do agree with the marine biologist’s conclusion that this was a conjoined dolphin pup? How did it manage to survive for so long?
