Isn’t it remarkable? Normally the waves round down stones over time. That’s where sand comes from. In this case we’ve square salt cubes washing up. Salt would normally dissolve in water. Cubes caught in waves wouldn’t keep their straight edges for long.

Have you ever been to the Dead Sea? What was it like and would you recommend it to others?
If you’re tempted by a holiday to the Dead Sea then you can check out Expedia’s city guide, easyJet’s holiday page or even Lastminute’s insights.
I’ve been to the Dead Sea (Jordan side) – the sensation of floating is totally surreal, even in just 1 foot deep water! I really didn’t expect to float so well! If you ever get the chance – do it! I was staying in Amman for business but went over one evening after work before the sun went down. Many of the hotels there offer guest passes for people to use their ‘beaches’ to take a dip. Whatever you do though, DO stay front side up and DO NOT try to swim. The water is so salt-saturated that even the tiniest drop of water in your eye stings like hell!
SarahOliver Thank you! That’s really quite useful advice! The idea of a sea worth of salt in my eye isn’t a happy one.
How did you get to the Dead Sea? One of the big tour operators? Would you use them again?
AndrewGirdwood SarahOliver It was all arranged for me by the company I was working with in Amman. I think I used the Movenpick Hotel facilities.
