The surprising history of bikes

July 7, 2016 by Andrew Leave a Comment

We’re a fan of the humble push bike here at In Pure Spirit. Why? They’re green and good for you. Not only do pedal cycles not eat up fossil fuels but they don’t take up much space on the road.

Did you know the bicycle will be 200 next year? Baron von Drais’ “Draisine” was invented in 1817 and is considered the first bike.

Do you cycle? What tips would you give someone who is thinking of beginning to cycle into work in the morning?

Food for Thought: Should we eat bugs?

January 4, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

This animation by Emma Bryce makes the case that we should consider eating bugs. You’ll probably have to watch it before you’d even consider the idea.

The animation was bone by Neighbor and if the narration sounds familiar it is because you’re hearing the voice of Addison Anderson who’s featured on TED-Ed before.

Would you eat bugs? Do you think we should start to farm them more seriously?

Naturally naked: Emma Watson supports Earth Day

March 23, 2013 by Andrew Leave a Comment

These rather primal photos of grown-up star Emma Watson are by James Houston for the book Natural Beauty.

As we have Earth Hour today and Earth Day later on in April it is a great time to be thinking about the issues raised.

What do you think of Miss Watson’s pictures? Classy? Helping raise the profile of an important issue? Or are these out of character for the actress?

Cut leaf art

cut leaf art

This this clever leaf art wonderful?

There’s an important message here too. This art reminds us that every green leaf is capable of trapping CO2 and helping protect our enviroment.

In Pure Spirit

Is art just art? Nice to look at but of no value beyond that? Or can campaigns like this cut leaf art actually help to encourage people to be greener?

Making your own natural swimming pool

February 3, 2012 by Andrew 1 Comment

In this video David Pagan Butler – a man with a great name and a record of making films for the BBC on natural swimming pools – shows us the highlights behind his own natural swimming pool.

A more detailed guide and DVD are available from Green-Shopping.co.uk. In the meantime this video serves to inspire and impress with the delightful sights and animal attraction of a natural swimming pool.

This blogger lives in Scotland and is not convinced a natural swimming pool would ever be warm enough. Is he wrong?

Are you tempted by one?

Is the internet dirty or green?

July 13, 2011 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Patrick Clair as produced a fantastic video which asks; “How Green is your internet?” and in it people may discover the web is browner than they thought.

Apple and Facebook are two villians in the piece. Google and Yahoo are two of the best. In particular, Google is trying to be carbon neutral, has set up Google Energy to invest millions in green energy – including $20m on high altitute kites that harvest wind power.

Are you surprised by the video? Do you doubt it?

Funny, cute and green

July 7, 2011 by Andrew 1 Comment

These three YouTube videos are a sample of superb character design and animated comedy. More than that; they’re a pro-green message given in a friendly, fun and easy to consume way.

We need more ads like this in order to ensure the green message embeds with the younger generations.

In Pure Spirit

Which was your favourite?

Do you think this is the way we should be bringing the green message to younger generations? Or is this too simple?

Green Google: The Hamina data centre in Finland

May 26, 2011 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Google tries to be green. The company is certainly investing a lot in green energy – although part of this is commerical wisdom; Google consumes a lot of energy and traditional prices will only rise.

Data centres are big factory like buildings which house all the computer servers companies like Google, Yahoo and AOL use. It’s big business. After the video from Google about their Hamina efforts there’s a data centre infographic that might help put some of this into perspective.

No Joke: Save as .WWF

December 6, 2010 by Andrew 2 Comments

Quite a lot of people have dismissed the .WWF format as a joke. A spoof or viral marketing campaign by WWF Germany.

It’s easy to see why. If you pop over to Save as .WWF you’ll be told there’s only a Mac version ready. You have to Facebook Like the page to be alerted once the PC version is ready. That’s not really how the “Like” button works.

I thought that the webpage was pulling a simple trick; telling Mac users that only the PC version was ready and telling PC users that only the Mac version was ready.

As it happens; it’s no joke. WWF Germany really have launched a .WWF format. Turns out it’s just a modified PDF. It’s also already been cracked – by one Hams Bezemer.

Does Fonterra kill orangutans?

October 13, 2010 by Andrew 3 Comments

Fonterra controls about 30% of the world’s diary exports. The company is owned by more than 10,500 New Zealand famers and has revenues in excess of NZ$16 billion.

Fonterra is also the target of the Dutch arm of Greenpeace.

Greenpeace’s beef with Fonterra is over the company’s use of palm kernel. The pressure group points out that the harvesting of the palm kernal fuels rainforest destruction and this leads to the removal of the endangered orangtans’ habitat.

To make their point, Greenpeace have paid for this video and advert.
