The long dragons and real life

July 26, 2018 by Andrew 1 Comment

The artist of Chinese artist Guodong Zhao is incredible. Based in Beijing, this talented illustrator takes photographs and paints on a layer of fantasy.

Sad or surreal? It’s as these long Asian dragons should be majestic, proud and perhaps even a little menacing. By showing them, sometimes, ruined and wrecked against the sharp contrast of reality Zhao easily transforms them into being of sadness and despair.

This bust is the design of Victoria Curtin Rivera of Chibinendo Art. The studio offers limited edition statues, busts and fine pieces of art. Rivera takes commissions but her shop has some designs for pin-ups, merch inspired by films, literature and music as well her own designs.

I think both the shrunekn head and this scary clown might do well over Halloween! After all, who wouldn’t want a shrunken head on the mantelpiece?

On the Boundaries of Darkness

February 18, 2016 by Andrew 1 Comment

This collection of artwork from Russian illustrator Anton Semenov is scary, dark and impressive. I’m reminded of H. R. Giger.

Semenov shares his work on Behance using the name Gloom82.

Is this your sort of art or is it all rather to bleak to look at?

Capture your very own little faery

January 14, 2016 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Artist Johana Molina has some unique creations for sale in her Etsy store Little Folk of Faery.

As the name suggests the Chilean artist sells decorative faeries, made with love, and cutely placed in little Victorian style sample jars. It’s a chance to have your very own faery discovery on display on the mantle.

Weird 3D woodland animal spirit

3d-animal

This interesting animation is popular on Tumblr. I can’t trace it further than that. It shows a woodland spirit, some sort of monster, or perhaps a fairy from the night court and uses a flickering motion to give a 3D effect.

Projection mapping creates a forest wonderland

January 7, 2015 by Andrew Leave a Comment

There are no special effects in this video. Have a look.

What’s going on? If there are no special effects applied to this video when there do all the glowing lights come from?

This is an art project. The glow comes from the forest. It’s not all natural. The most striking effects are projection mapping – in other words; tightly focused, bright lights that are shone onto the woodland.

Created by Friedrich van Schoor and Tarek Mawad the project took six weeks in the forest to complete. You can read more about it at Bioluminescent-Forest.com.

Tempted by a trip or even a holiday in the woods now? Solutions like English Country Cottages, Explore! for action holidays, woodland lodges from Hoseasons, Haven or even National Trust membership to grant you access to some superb wild areas are good.

Demons, kings and fairies at the Hill of Witches

June 28, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

There are more than 80 different wooden carvings in a forest in Juodkrante, Lithuania called the Hill of Witches (“Raganu kalnas”). The project started in 1979 and is now a public trail that takes walkers through a collection of myths and legends from Lithuanian folklore.

On June 24th, each year, people sing and dance to bring in the midsummer. The celebrations date back to pagan beliefs but after Christianity came to Lithuania the festivities became known as the Saint Jonas’ Festival.

Tree spirit carvings

June 24, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Have you noticed the Weirwood in Game of Thrones? These are the trees with white bark, blood coloured leaves and heart trees are a type of Weirwood that have had a face carved in them.

Artist Keith Jennings carves his own trees. He calls the project “Tree Spirits”.

12 stunning storms used as art

January 20, 2014 by Andrew Leave a Comment

These photographs are the work of superb storm chaser Mike Hollingshead. He is one of those stuntmen-meets-scientists who leap in cars and zoom off in search of terrifyingly bad weather like tornadoes and super storms.

Many of these photographs are for sale and available as prints from his website Extreme Instability. If you like this sample then go shopping.

Would you consider spending a year as a storm chaser? Grabbing a camera, laptop and jumping into a car to speed off into danger? Or are you just glad that those who hear the calling also take some impressive photographs?

What sort of camera set up would you recommend for storm chasing and weather photography?
