Three green resolutions for the Chinese New Year

January 24, 2009 by Andrew Leave a Comment

This year the Chinese New Year falls on January the 26th and will be the Year of the Ox. The Ox is a water animal, a patient and determined leader. The Ox picks a goal and works steadily towards achieving it. The Year of the Ox is a good year for making resolutions.

Let’s look at three simple green resolutions worth making this year.

Resolution: Smarter and greener money.

The credit crunch is horrid. Tens of thousands of people are loosing their jobs and the rest of us face a great deal of uncertainty. One of the trends we’ve seen already is that less people are willing to make that extra effort to find a greener or more ethical purchase. That’s a shame.

If your car insurance is coming up we have a green money tip. The car insurance company I Buy Eco* has a clever idea. All its car insurance is carbon neutral. Their website headlines that you could save up to £180 pounds on your car insurance but the really important bit is that with this program it easy to offset %100 of your car’s CO2 emissions.

Brilliant.

Resolution: A safe and green home.

Another terrible stat Window alarmto recently be announced is that house break ins and burglary have risen dramatically. Some expects say that the rise in crime is directly related to the insecurity and lack of money caused by the credit crunch.

It is neither advisable nor possible to turn your home into a fortress but it is certainly a wise idea to make it as hard as possible for someone to break into and ransack. The windows are often a weak spot. That’s where window alarms come in. An environmentally friendly company called Smart Solar makes a set of window alarms* that use a hybrid of solar and rechargeable environmentally friendly batteries. The alarms are affixed to the window as so many solar powered products are. The alarm is triggered when the connection between the alarm and the side of the window is broken.

As the alarms are clearly visible they make extremely effective deterrents* too.

We’re all subject to bad luck but if we pay attention to some basic safety tips we can help reduce the chances of a burglary.

  1. Double-check that you’ve locked every door and window
  2. Don’t make it easy for people to tell that there is no one at home
  3. Don’t put valuables in the window

Resolution: A greener and healthier lifestyle

So far we’ve discussed ChWhisper Worksinese New Year resolutions that could improve the fitness of your wallet and of your house – but what about your own body?

A bike! There isn’t any need to discuss the merits of a bike – it’ll help you get and stay in shape, it’ll help you get from A to B and it is far kinder to the environment than all those CO2 bleaching cars.

If you wanted a bike then you would have bought a bike already, right? Perhaps a bike with a twist will help to change your mind. The Whisper Works* is an electric bike and as its name suggests it is as silent as a whisper.

The great thing about the Whisper Works and other electric bikes is that if you need an extra push to help you get where you’re going then you can simply ask the quiet engine for an extra bit of help. All of a sudden A seems much closer to B, the ride is far less tiring and yet you are still working on your fitness while helping the planet.
