Sheila Caldwell is an experienced lightworker based in Fife, Scotland. Sheila offers healing consultations and is an accomplished author having penned the extremely useful ‘An A – Z for Lightworkers’.
In Pure Spirit invited Sheila to help our readers navigate through some commonly confused lightworking terminology. We’re very pleased to say that not only did Sheila kindly agree but she’s provided us with a fantastic guest article.

Some commonly confused lightworking terminology
Affirmation – usual usage – saying ‘Yes’
In Lightwork, affirmations are what create our future. We virtually manifest everything in our lives by what we think and say. It is valuable to listen to your self talk… are you constantly worrying and complaining about money, the weather, your weight, your work?
Whatever you give your attention to is what you attract in your life. If you want peace and prosperity, then you have to be peaceful and talk and act as though you have abundance. Try affirming daily, ‘All my needs are met, abundantly’.
‘Money flows to me quickly and freely.’ ‘Everything is unfolding as it should and I am always in the right place at the right time’. What you focus on is what you create.
Angel – a spiritual being attendant upon God, depicted in human form with wings.
In Lightwork, angels are becoming more and more evident in people’s lives. They are not just something that you may have read about as a child in Sunday School, there are millions of them flocking to help us in these times.
There are very many different types of angel, but the one nearest to you is your Guardian or Companion angel who has been with you from birth or before. They are generally invisible to the human eye but more and more people are having angel sightings. You simply have to ask for help from an angel and it will be given. Angels use small feathers, usually white, as ‘calling cards.’
Look out for them as they will confirm something or convey a message to you.
Aura – often thought to be a particular colour and definite size.
In fact, the aura or energy field, as stated below, is constantly changing depending upon our feelings. Generally speaking, the aura is an egg shape roughly spreading out around our bodies to just over arm’s length all around and above and below us. There are ever-changing colours in the aura, depending upon our thoughts and interactions with others at the time.
When you have an aura (Kirlian) photograph taken, it just shows your aura in that second in which the picture was taken. The colours will change again as the situations change. The aura also expands and contracts with our emotions. If you are sad, negative or angry, the aura shrinks considerably. If you are positive and happy and filled with love, then the aura expands and can fill a room!
Just think how you could affect every single person with whom you come into contact just by being positive and loving in your attitude. It’s worth thinking about the next time you walk down the street.
Channelling – Getting messages from spirits or dead people.
Channelling is a term used to describe being the ‘piece of plumber’s pipe’ or conduit for either healing energy – as in Reiki, SourceSTAR etc -or information sent through from Ascended Masters, Angels and the like from the realms of spirit.
If you are sent emails of channelled messages, remember to use discernment and don’t just automatically believe something because it supposedly comes from Archangel Michael or St. Germain or the like. Feel what the message is saying, and if it sits well with you, then that is fine.
There are many people out there working from ego but there are just as many genuine lightworkers who are bringing through vital messages of encouragement and wisdom.
Crystals – semi-precious and precious gemstones, used for jewellery. Pretty but that’s all.
In fact, crystals and semi-precious gemstones have a very definite energy of their own and each has a different property. They are not ‘just rocks’ as some people may imagine. Think of them as frozen sunlight or fire. When that energy is released, it is very powerful.
Crystals can be used for healing and support. They tend to choose you rather than the other way round! If you are thinking of purchasing a crystal, just go into the shop with the intention to find the crystal that is most appropriate for your need.
You will probably be attracted to a stone which may not necessarily be perfectly shaped, but you will love the feeling of it in your hand, or it’s colour. It may give a ‘buzzy’ sensation or heat up quickly when you hold it. Always cleanse your crystal when you return home to remove negative energies which it will have absorbed from everyone who has handled it from the miner to the shop assistant.
There are many good illustrated books on the subject of crystals and their uses, if you wish to investigate further as the subject is too vast to cover here.
Energy – usual usage – vitality or heat energy
In Lightwork, energy is what everything is made of. In fact, we are energy. Our physical bodies are surrounded by an energy field, or aura, which is constantly moving and changing in size.
Our energies are affected by emotions, health and surroundings and we are frequently interacting with the energy fields of other people. Some people are very needy and they draw energy from us.
That explains why you feel drained after being in their company. You will all have experienced the sensation of walking into a room where there has been a heated exchange or argument. You can sense the tension. You are feeling the energy of the disagreement.
There are many forms of energy healing such as Reiki, SourceSTAR, Spiritual Healing, Rising Star, to name but a few. All of these healing energies are helpful in bringing the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies into balance.
Forgiveness – To grant pardon, or cease to blame.
Forgiveness is the key to moving forward with your life. Many people are unwilling to release themselves from bitterness and hurt.
The main reason is probably that they don’t understand that by forgiving someone, they are not condoning the act, but they are releasing the electrical charge, the pain. By holding on to the anger, hurt or need for revenge, the only person you are hurting is yourself. The other person is totally unaware of your feelings.
God – Male, Father, someone who lives in Heaven and judges us when we die.
This is too big a subject for this article, but God is not someone or something separate from you that you pray to ‘up there.’ God, Source, All that is, Allah, The One whatever name you use, is in everything on the Earth and is in all of us. We are all part of Mother/Father God. Yes, she/he is not just male. That was something that came about when man translated the scriptures. It is a form of masculine control.
You need to realise that you are part of God and are very beautiful and powerful and very loved. Realise that we are all part of the Oneness.
Healing – being restored to perfect health.
Sometimes, when people are very ill, they grasp at straws and go in search of someone who can heal them. Sometimes they are fortunate and totally recover, Other times, the illness persists. Now, there isn’t really such a thing as a ‘healer.’ That is just a term that has been put on people who work with healing energies like SourceSTAR and Reiki, or who do Shamanic work.
The person who is doing the healing is the recipient, client or patient, whatever you choose to call them. Sometimes it is not in that person’s highest interests to be healed, so the practitioner should never be blamed if the ‘patient’ doesn’t respond as anticipated. Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of fresh air, exercise and sleep.
Try to live ‘in the now’ and don’t worry about the future. If you are doing what you can to change any limiting belief within yourself and releasing any guilt, and forgiving everyone, especially yourself, then you are doing what you can to maintain your health. By all means have regular energy healing sessions from a reputable practitioner, especially in time of illness or stress. It will never do any harm.
Spirit – ghost; scary thing; comes through in a séance; something we turn into when we die.
We don’t have a spirit, we are spirit. We are amazing beings of light and energy who have been around for eons, and when we decide to incarnate on Earth to have particular experiences, we take on a physical appearance!
The physical body we have is no more than a ‘hired car’ that we have chosen for this lifetime. Some people fear that they will see spirits when they go to bed at night. Be assured that if you don’t want to see spirits, then you won’t!
Only a few clairvoyant people actually see spirit and communicate with them although we all have Spirit Guides who impress us through our thoughts to help us with our daily lives. Angels and Spirit Guides never tell you what to do or try to manipulate your mind. They just gently nudge you in the right direction or give you an idea or inspiration. They are filled with unconditional love for you.
