Ecotopia – Play the game on Facebook, save the planet

June 22, 2011 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Indie game studio Talkie issued a brave challenge during the Games for Change Festival. They promised to plant 25,000 trees in the real world, which could remove about 100,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere if Ecotopia players could plant more than 25,000 trees in 25 days (or less) in the Facebook page.

It’s more than a PR stunt from Talkie. The whole Games for Change Festival is about showing how online games can have a positive effect in the real world.

Chris Swain, founder and CEO of Talkie, and a professor and research institute director at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Interactive Media Division said;

“Our goal for Ecotopia is to create awareness, engagement and activism within our community and beyond.

“Deforestation releases nearly two billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, meaning the destruction of the world’s forests harms not only local communities, but Earth as a whole. With the help of our fans this challenge will allow us to make a larger global impact, working toward a positive change through attainable actions in-game.”

Players and Facebook users an join the game here.
