True Romance

In addition to some lovely roses True Romance has some Ginestra. As it happens there’s a number of Genisteae for Arena to pick from but it’s worth knowing about the Welsh myth of Blodeuwedd.
Blodeuwedd is a woman made from the flowers of broom which traditionally made from Ginestra. The flower is associated with weddings.

Genistra tinctoria is also known as dyer’s broom and was once used as a powerful yellow dye.

True Romance has 6 x sweet avalanche roses, 6 x red Naomi roses, 2 pink ginestra and 4 x parvi.

Desire

val16-desire-C
A popular gift for Valentine’s Day, the Desire bouquet contains 7 x purple Alstromeria, 5 x cerise rose, 5 x purple carnation, 5 x pink hypericum and is hand tied by florists.

The lead flower, the Alstromeria, is traditionally associated with friendship and devotion. It’s said that the upside down leaves, that twist and turn, is similar to the way friendships mature.

If you’re looking to avoid red roses then this particular bouquet steps up as an interesting choice.

Spring Meadow

es16-spring-meadow-C
This is a busy bouquet which you can customise with a vase and a classic look.

This bouquet contains Agapanthus a flower named after the Greek words “agape” and “anthos” or love flower. In the language of flowers the Agapanthus is occasionally used to mean “love letter”.

In parts of Africa the roots of the Agapanthus plant are sometimes boiled in water to create a tonic given to pregnant woman. This may be a dangerous thing to do as the sap contains substances that can upset the skin.

The Spring Meadow contains 4 x blue Agapanthus, 6 x white avalanche roses, 4 x tanaceturm, 3 x greenbell, 4 x yellow spray roses and 6 x Eucalyptus robusta.

Middlemist’s Red rescued by Chiswick House restoration

March 10, 2010 by Andrew 1 Comment

There are only two surviving blooms of the rare camellia; one is in Waitangi, New Zealand, and the other one is in Chiswick House in London.

It is thought that Middlemist’s Red has been present in Chiswick conservatory since the early 19th century. The plant is believed to have come from China, brought to Britain by John Middlemist of Shepherd’s Bush.

The camellia is thought to have arrived in the UK just after 1823 – only a decade after the conservatory first opened in 1813. The conservatory has stood, but slowly run down, over the centuries. At one point the home actually served as a lunatic asylum. The conservatory was hit by an unexploded bomb during World War II; it survived but all the glass was broken.

The current restoration of the conservatory was cost more than £12 million and was co-managed between Chiswick House and Gardens Trust and the English Heritage.

Are you pleased to see such a rare planet safe and sound in a newly restored, historic conservatory? Or is £12m too much for projects such as this?

Coping with unlucky lilac in the house

May 16, 2009 by Andrew 3 Comments

Old English tradition considers lilac to be an unlucky flower which should not be carried into the house. This tradition is particularly strong in Norfolk and surrounding areas.

Lilac

It is often suggested that the lilac flower – especially the white blossom – is associated with death and that’s why lilac is unlucky. As a result lilac is especially unwelcome in hospitals.

To understand how to cope with lilac in the house we need to look at more closely at the superstition.

The Lilac Tree was once associated with faeries. The fragrance of the tree was so sweet and powerful that it would entice fairfolk and to have lilac flowers in the house would lure the faeries inside.

Faeries were often feared. They were wild and unpredictable. Even pranks and games might prove to be deadly. Worse of all faeries would kidnap people and carry them to the realm of the fey.

The association lilac has with death originates from these roots – people going away and not coming back.

In order to safely display lilac in the house householders should take steps to keep faeries away. There are a number of methods for this. Faeries, it is said, will not cross a line of salt and are vulnerable to cold iron but neither of these methods are particular appropriate for modern households.

Wind chimes serve to distract faeries both with their tinkle and motion. To avoid the lilac bad luck consider putting up wind chimes.

Are you superstitious? Do traditions and fears which originated hundreds of years ago in England mean anything to you today?
