Does something linger in Morecambe’s Alhambra Building?

October 26, 2009 by Andrew 5 Comments

Situated on Marine Road West in Morecambe is the old and decaying Alhambra Building. Today the building houses an antique shop and disco with bars.

The theatre was gutted by a serious fire in 1970 and rebuilt as a disco. Built in 1901 the building was known as Alhambra Theatre and served as such. Some of the building was converted into a cinema in 1930. Before the fire, owner Eddie Morrell was known for the pantos the theatre hosted.

There are neither records of anyone having being killed in the 1970s fire that is easily available on the Internet nor mentions of death or murder in the building. However, Twitter speculation from paranormal investigators suggests that there may be a dark entity in the building; a murderer or worse.

The Alhambra Building is situated on the same line as the haunted Morecambe Winter Gardens. The Winter Gardens are between the pier and Marine Road Central. The old theatre is only five minutes walk down Marine Road West.

A common theory that surrounds the Morecambe Winter Gardens is that it is the sight of a spiritual clash between good and evil; there reportedly a ‘good side’ and an ‘evil side’ to that building. Could all the energy generated by the nearby Alhambra theatre have been enough to draw the attention of those awoken spirits?

It is said that staff in one disco bar and perhaps in the antique shop (which has stocked terracotta warriors) have heard whispering voices and other strange sounds. There are unconfirmed reports that EVP tests have provoked some form of high-frequency responses.

The TV show Most Haunted Live scheduled an investigation of the building for the 26th of October.

Have you been inside any of the Alhambra Building? What was it like? Could you sense anything dark?

I worked in the building for carleton caterers as the lighting/stage designer for 8 years. I spent countless nights alone in the building, both in the carleton ( nightclub ) and in the cellars where we would store equipment and carry out repairs.
On no occasion have i heard anything that could not be easily explained nor seen anything remotely bizzare .
The building is in a sorry shape and to better a phrase has more holes than a tea-bag, being situated on the sea front on the corner of marine road and regent road, wind howles through the place causing noises at one end and bangs and groans due to movement of fixtures and fittings, this in turn continues down many of the long fire escapes which in turn create their own resonating frequencies. Due to the position of the building the wind can wrap around two sides causing sudden changes of pressure inside, this can easily be demonstrated with a smoke machine and warching the behaviour of the fog and its rapid movements through the building and seemingly bizzare patterns.
Above the disco is a large roof space containing access to the burnt remains of tne gods and former theatre rigging and home to a few hundred pidgeons. The space itself creates a vaccum that counters the ambient pressure in the disco below creating loud bangs and the suspended ceiling to breathe and lift . This same effect causes parts of the building to change temperature in seconds.
In my time there , neither myself or any colleagues fealt any wrong in the building or any uneasiness.
I am more lead to pressume the sudden paranormal status of the building is a last gasp attempt by the current owners to garner publicity for a quickly diminishing trade and i would happily challenge any ghost hunter to spend a night with me and show me something i cannot prove or explain.

I appeared in many shows in both the Winter Gardens and the Alhambra Theatre, and did not feel that there were any spirits evil or otherwise in those theatres. They were old and interesting! I did play the ouija board at the Winter Gardens when I was doing a Panto and it scared me.

CliffordWhen made black and white, then rebalanced in order to make eihetr smoother gradients or more contrasting edges, your work would make GREAT displacement and bump maps for solid objects that serve as light sources. And good on’ya for making them from scratch in Photoshop!
