Your Takeaway is on its Way… by Robot Dog

September 12, 2025 by Andrew Leave a Comment

It’s a scene straight from a science fiction novel. You’re walking down a street in Zurich, and trotting towards you isn’t a dog, but a four-legged robot, cheerfully carrying someone’s takeaway dinner. This isn’t the future; it’s the now, as food delivery giants begin to unleash their new mechanical workforce.

Just Eat Dog

The familiar ping of a delivery notification is about to get a whole lot weirder. Companies like Just Eat Takeaway are piloting these robotic couriers, transforming our cityscapes into something out of Black Mirror (hopefully one of the less terrifying episodes). But what does this robo-revolution mean for our late-night kebabs, and for us?

Delve Deeper

    Gazing into the archives...

The robot delivery fleet is surprisingly diverse. In Zurich, Just Eat has partnered with Swiss firm RIVR to deploy wheeled-legged ‘robo-dogs’. According to reports, these nimble bots can handle stairs, navigate around obstacles, and brave everything from snow to high heat, all while being monitored in real-time.

Meanwhile, in Dublin, the company has already launched a drone delivery service with Manna Drones Ltd, promising to get food from the kitchen to your doorstep in as little as three minutes.

And in the US, Uber Eats has opted for a less animalistic approach. Their delivery robot is more like a friendly, high-tech rolling suitcase. It’s compact, secure, and uses a suite of sensors to navigate the urban jungle. While it might not be able to climb your front steps, it represents a quieter, more subtle vision of our automated future.

The Ghost in the Delivery Machine

How do these little couriers ‘see’ the world? It’s a fascinating blend of technologies that feels almost like magic. Marko Bjelonic, CEO of RIVR, calls it “Physical AI,” allowing the robots to “understand and adapt to the real world.”

This isn’t just a simple remote-controlled car. These robots are packed with sophisticated systems:

    • LIDAR: This acts as the robot’s eyes, using laser light to measure distances and build a 3D map of its surroundings.
    • Cameras: Multiple cameras help the bot recognise street signs, traffic lights, and potential obstacles.
    • AI Navigation: A complex brain processes all this information, planning routes and making real-time decisions to avoid pedestrians, pets, and potholes.

It’s the kind of technology that can spark a real passion for engineering. For any budding roboticists inspired by these four-legged couriers, you can find all sorts of fascinating DIY robot kits on places like Etsy, where creators design everything from simple bots to complex programmable kits. The rise of AI in our daily lives is something we’ve explored before, and it continues to raise fascinating questions.

    More Than Just a Novelty?

Beyond the initial “wow” factor, there are some serious benefits to this automated revolution. Proponents point to a future with:

    • Less Congestion: Fewer delivery cars and scooters on the road could mean less traffic.
    • Greener Cities: The robots are electric, producing zero tailpipe emissions.
    • Lower Costs: In theory, automation could bring down those pesky delivery fees.

However, this shiny new future has a shadow side. The biggest concern is the human one. The rise of delivery robots directly impacts the gig workers who currently bring us our food. Unions and workers’ rights groups are understandably worried about job displacement.

Furthermore, there are serious ethical questions to navigate. How do we ensure these robots don’t become a menace on crowded pavements, especially for people with disabilities? Who is liable when a robot has an accident? And in an age of constant surveillance, how do we protect the privacy of the data these sensor-packed machines are constantly collecting? It’s a complex new frontier in the future of technology.

While you may not be able to order your next meal via a robot dog just yet, the convenience of having delicious food brought to your door is undeniable. Services like Gousto continue to offer amazing meal kits for those who prefer a more hands-on, but still incredibly simple, dinner experience.

    In Pure Spirit

The robot couriers are here, and more are coming. They represent a technological leap that is equal parts exciting, strange, and a little unsettling. We’re stepping into a world where our daily interactions might be with autonomous machines, a change that brings both incredible convenience and complex new challenges. What do you think?
