Flood chaser David Rankin uses the term “dry wash” in this video to describe this flash flood. I see why. It looks like there’s a river of dirt, stone and earth that spills out of nowhere and rockets along the flat Utah Desert.
This is an impressive sight. What’s actually happening is that rain which fell hours ago, further uphill has been gathering bits and pieces and debris and picking up speed. Given Rankin’s skill at chasing floods he’s able to predict where the dry wash will appear.
