The dramatic Pennne moorland is a popular location for walkers even in the winter and for bird watchers. In particular the moorland around Derwent Edge is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is home to the Mountain Hare, Ring Ouzel, Eurasian Golden Plover and the Red Grouse.
